Kelimutu, Flores Island, Indonesia
Kelimutu is a volcano. But it’s not just any volcano. This volcano contains 3 crater lakes, and each of them is a different color. The first lake is called Tiwu Ata Bupu, which means Lake of Old People and it’s usually blue. The other two lakes are called Tiwu Ko’o Fai Nuwa Muri (Lake of Young Men and Maidens) and Tiwu Ata Polo (Bewitched or Enchanted Lake). The Lake of the Young Men and Maidens is usually green and the Enchanted Lake is usually red. The colors of lakes vary periodically and no one really knows why. The most probable reason for the color change is the volcano’s activity.
